Do you want to join Helsinki Roller Derby as a skater? Stay tuned for our next Freshmeat Training Period (FTP)!

You can ask when the next FTP begins by sending e-mail to info (at) helsinkirollerderby.com.

FTP is a beginners’ course for 18-year-olds and above and it takes place in Bunkkeri. The FTP costs 120 €, which covers the weekly skating practices and few lessons about rules and officiating. The course also includes some off-skates training sessions on Tuesday evenings and attending our league’s Friday evening scrimmages.

To participate in the FTP, you will need to have your own roller derby gear (quad skates and protection), of which you can find more information below.

We recommend signing up at freshmeat (at) helsinkirollerderby.com as soon as possible, as there are only 25 places available per course.

Before the course kicks off, Helsinki Roller Derby hosts an Open Skate Event, where you can try quad skates under experienced skaters’ supervision and hear more about this fantastic sport!

ROLLER DERBY GEAR

You will need your own gear, if you want to take part in our beginners’ course. Roller derby is a full-contact sport, which means that in addition to the quad roller skates (no inline skates are allowed!), you will need good protective gear. The obligatory protection includes helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards.

You can find protective gear from normal sports stores, but we recommend attaining them from shops that specialize in roller derby or at least skate boarding. There are two Finnish roller derby stores that you can find from online: GearCheck and Jam in the Box. If you prefer to hunt for second hand gear, we recommend joining the Derbykirppis Rollaattori Facebook group.
